Florida licenses several beauty specialties. If you work in facials and skin care, nails, or as a full specialist, this article explains how CE applies to you.
Does CE apply to my specialty?
Yes. Florida Cosmetologists, Full Specialists, Nail Specialists and Facial Specialists who renew their license complete 10 hours of continuing education. Our course is approved for all four license types.
What the 10 hours cover for skin care and nails
- Sanitation and sterilization (3 hours). Tools, surfaces, foot spas, extraction and facial equipment, and nail implements all depend on correct disinfection.
- HIV/AIDS and communicable diseases (1 hour). Essential when you work close to skin, cuticles and small breaks in the skin.
- Chemical makeup of hair, skin and nails (1 hour). Helps skin care and nail professionals understand ingredients, reactions and sensitivities.
- Skin Cancer elective (1 hour). Very relevant if you see faces, necks, scalps, hands and nails every day.
- OSHA, workers' compensation, laws and rules, and environmental issues (4 hours). Cover safe workplaces, your legal obligations and product and waste handling.
Why it matters if you do facials and skin care
Facial specialists work with active ingredients, exfoliation and close skin contact. CE reinforces safe handling, clean technique and knowing when a skin concern should be seen by a doctor.
Why it matters if you do nails
Nail specialists handle sharp tools, monomers, dust and chemicals every day. CE keeps you current on sanitation, ventilation, and safe handling of products.
How to complete it
- Register with your license type (Cosmetologist, Full Specialist, Nail Specialist or Facial Specialist) and number.
- Read the booklet online, one screen at a time.
- Pass the quiz with 75% and download your certificate.
- We report your completion to the DBPR.

Do facial specialists need the same CE as cosmetologists?
Yes. The 10-hour requirement applies to all four license types when renewing.
Does the course cover nails and skin?
Yes. It includes sanitation, chemical makeup of hair, skin and nails, and a Skin Cancer elective, in addition to the other required subjects.
Can I take it on my phone?
Yes. The course is designed to work on phones, tablets and computers.
