How to Renew Your Florida Cosmetology License, Step by Step

MDT Beauty School · · 3 min read · Leer en español

How to renew a Florida cosmetology, nail, facial or full specialist license: find your deadline, finish 10 CE hours, check they were reported and pay the $45 DBPR fee.

Renewing is not hard, but the steps have to happen in the right order. This guide walks through them in plain language. Fees and dates can change, so confirm them on the Florida DBPR website before you pay.

When does my license expire?

Florida cosmetology licenses renew every two years. The DBPR splits licensees into two groups:

  • Group 1 licenses expire on October 31 of odd-numbered years (2025, 2027, 2029).
  • Group 2 licenses expire on October 31 of even-numbered years (2026, 2028, 2030).

In 2026 October 31 falls on a Saturday, and the DBPR lists the Group 2 deadline as November 2, 2026. The DBPR also emails a renewal notice about 90 to 120 days before your license expires, so keep your email address up to date in your account.

Not sure which group you are in? Look up your license on MyFloridaLicense.com and read the expiration date.

Step 1: Finish your 10 hours of CE

Cosmetologists, Nail Specialists, Facial Specialists and Full Specialists complete the same 10 hours:

  • HIV/AIDS: 1 hour
  • Sanitation and sterilization: 3 hours
  • OSHA: 0.5 hour
  • Workers' compensation: 0.5 hour
  • Laws and rules: 2 hours
  • Chemical makeup: 1 hour
  • Environmental issues: 1 hour
  • One hour in any subject related to cosmetology (our course uses the Skin Cancer elective)

All 10 hours must come from a provider approved by the DBPR. You can take them online. Our course is DBPR course #0501822, provider PVD703, and one course covers all 10 hours.

Step 2: Make sure your hours were reported

Your provider reports your completion to the DBPR electronically. Reporting is not always instant, so do not wait for the last day. If you want to confirm that your hours reached the DBPR, you can call the Board of Cosmetology at 850.487.1395 with your certificate in hand.

Keep your certificate of completion either way. It is your own proof that you finished the course.

Step 3: Renew your license and pay the fee

  1. Log in to your account on MyFloridaLicense.com, or create one.
  2. Select your cosmetology license and start the renewal.
  3. Check that your address and email are correct.
  4. Pay the $45 renewal fee.
  5. Save or print your confirmation and your renewed license.

You can also renew by phone by calling the Board of Cosmetology at 850.487.1395.

What if I miss the deadline?

Do not practice on an expired license. If you miss the date, contact the DBPR right away at 850.487.1395 to ask about late renewal and what it requires. The sooner you finish your CE, the more options you keep.

Renew faster: finish your CE first

The most common delay is waiting for the CE to be reported. Finishing your 10 hours at least a week or two before your deadline leaves time for the report to reach the DBPR.
